Hampi, also known as the ‘City of Ruins’ is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the district of Vijayanagara and is the most visited place in Karnataka. Hampi can only be described as an open air museum, spreading over 15 square miles and surrounded by over 500 ancient monuments. Founded by two brothers Harihar and Burka in 1336, it was one of the largest Hindu Empires in the whole of India.
In its peak Vijayanagara housed half a million people and was the second largest city in the world, after Beijing.
A major battle took place between the Vijayanagara Kingdom and an alliance of five other Kingdoms which reduced it to the ruins that you see today.
Through the ruins you can delve into the past glories of the kingdom and visualize the monuments coming alive in front of your eyes.
Each stone tells a story, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the time when Medieval Kings and Emperors ruled the world.
A heritage site of architectural wonder, Hampi is a reminder of the splendor the country once had – an absolute delight for anyone interested in history & religion. The superior architecture and sheer genius of the ancestors leave you in awe of the enchanting town. The detailed carvings and breathtaking stone structures have to be seen to be believed, one can only imagine how stunningly beautiful it was in its heyday.
